Another Clock

Aside to Shayne: Is this the clock?

raggedy ann

I found it at ebay. Wouldn’t it be a lovely, nostalgic way to start out the day?

Wake Up, Doc!

Ryley’s current obsession is all-things Scooby. Prior to Scooby, he was a Bugs Bunny fan. He still is to a point, but if Bugs and Scooby were both in a burning building and Ryley had the training and equipment to save one of them, he would chose Scooby and leave Bugs to become Hossenfeffer.

During the height of Ryley’s Love-Bugs fest, hubby made the mistake of telling him about a clock he owned during his childhood–a talking Bugs Bunny alarm clock. This captured Ryley’s imagination to the point where he preferred hearing about daddy’s long-gone alarm clock over the most gripping bedtime story.

Hubby found The Clock on ebay and bought it for Ryley’s birthday. It was given to him this past Saturday and it has barely left Ryley’s sight since the paper and bow were torn off the box. Unfortunately, the recording of Bugs appeared to be broken, but the clock (wind up) was working. After a lot of tinkering with the clock, hubby got the recording working again on Sunday.

Bugs Bunny clock

The clock was set to go off at 6am on Monday morning. But much to Ryley’s great disappointment, it did not go off because the clock did not get properly wound the night before. Winding a clock? How archaic! The lesson was learned the hard way and promises were made to wind the clock and set the alarm for Tuesday morning.

This morning, hubby got up with Joel at about 5:30 am. He kindly let me sleep in because I had a rough night with my stuffy nose. About 15 minutes into my sleep-in, I heard it:

Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter)

I listened for stirring from the boy’s room down the hall. Nothing. The wake-up call repeated itself after a five second delay…Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter)

Then: Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter)

And again: Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter)

Still, nothing from the boy’s room. Should I go in and turn it off? No, that would mean Disappointing Morning #2 for Ryley. I had to give him the chance to wake up the way he has dreamed about. So I threw the covers over my head, trying to escape from: Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter)

I watched the time tick off our digital alarm clock. 10 minutes had passed and I heard the boy’s door creak open and the sound of footsteps head down the stairs. But for some reason, the alarm was still going strong: Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter)

Now, I was just being lazy and hoping that hubby would notice Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter) . But no.

Finally, I rolled out of bed to take care of Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter) . I entered the boys room and surveyed the three beds: Tommy’s bed, empty. Sam’s bed, empty. Ryley’s bed, full of a snoozing and oblivious boy to Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter) six feet from his head.

“Ryley! Wake up!” I said.

“What? Oh!” Ryley sprang up happily and ceased Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter) .

We went downstairs. Tommy and Sam sat bleary-eyed at the table, ironically and begrudgingly sprung from cozy beds by an alarm clock that brought such powerfully sweet dreams to Ryley that he slept right through approximately 482 repititions of Eh, wake up, doc! You asked me to call ya! So here I am telling you it’s time to wake up, doc! No more sleepin! Get up! Get up ya sleepy head! When you get up, I’ll go back to bed…(maniacal laughter) .

I hope Bugs Bunny, “back in bed”, had a nice little nap. He certainly worked hard enough getting Ryley up.

Ryley, The Six Year Old

He has made everyone aware that today is his birthday. He is expecting an avalanche of Scooby Doo splattered gifts. His cake features a three dimensional Mystery Machine. He wants brown balloons, a latex and helium salute to the Greatest Great Dane ever (even if he is a bit of a scaredy cat). His day has arrived. Ryley is six.

Last night, when thinking of what today would bring, I remembered the poem by A.A. Milne entitled “The End” from Now We Are Six.

When I was One,
I had just begun.

When I was Two,
I was nearly new.

When I was Three,
I was hardly me.

When I was Four,
I was not much more.

When I was Five,
I was just alive.

But now I am six,
I’m as clever as clever

So I think I’ll be six now
Forever and ever.

I think it reflects the childhood belief that whatever age you are is the best age, ever. Next year, seven will be heaven, then eight will be great. Nine will be sublime and ten–well, ten is when the double-digits begin and that is a milestone in itself.

Happy Birthday to our Ryley. You may not always find joy in brown balloons and spaghetti birthday dinners. I will always find joy in remembering how you have chosen to celebrate your six amazing years.
