Jaw-dropping

Mothers of many kids are often on the receiving end of baffling and rude questions. I got one this past weekend at a restaurant. But you can’t read about it here.

You have to pop over to my other haunt, Mile High Mamas. I wrote about the comment and the fact that families (especially larger families) are often overtly snubbed or scorned at restaurants—even “family” restaurants.

Please go say hello. You don’t have to be from Denver. I promise, we won’t check your driver’s license.

  • WOW. I mean, WOW. That is really amazing. So very inappropriate, even as a joke.

I bet your family is typically the best behaved in any restaurant situation.

  • Appalling, that’s what it is.

  • Just awful.

Thanks for always inviting us to read what you have to say over there!

  • Wow. I’ve never had people move before (but I only have four children…and one of them is a teen.), but I’ve seen the looks on a few occasions when I’ve sat down with my three younger children. Nobody has ever said anything rude, though. Maybe restaurant folks in Georgia are just more polite? Or maybe I’ve just been really lucky. :o)

  • Some people just don’t think. at. all. before they say comments like that. Totally inappropriate. I’ve never had trouble at restaurants, but my parents were out with Sydney one time (at a nice restaurant) and someone (another patron) came over to tell them that this was not an establishment for children. Sydney wasn’t acting out or anything; the guy was just annoyed that a child was in the restaurant. My parents told the guy he was ridiculous and to leave if he wanted.

I don’t think I would have been as composed as they were.

  • I hate to admit it, but I’ve said “hands full” type comments to parents of large families on more than one occasion. A big part of it is that parenting doesn’t come easy to me – I was never around small children until my son was born, I didn’t have any concept of how to take care of a child. And now I’m faced with an even bigger challenge, because I had NO modeling on how to raise siblings to get along, and my daughter is quite the little pusher. So to see a large family, where all the kids get along and behave well, makes my eyes go wide.

I love being a mom, my husband loves being a dad, but if you’d seen us six years ago you would likely have told us to never have kids. My son seemed to be turning out OK (although he hit his terrible twos while I was pregnant, and if he’d hit them before I was pregnant my daughter might never have been conceived), and when we were thinking about having another one, we were told by my son’s former child care provider that having another one would be a bad idea because he would never be willing to share the attention. So the idea of having six! is rather daunting. It’s not a reflection on you, most likely, when people say things like that, it’s more likely a reflection on themselves that they don’t think they could handle it.

I feel embarrassed for that lady who asked if you beat your kids. What was she thinking?
