But wait!

Now the Yale student, Aliza Shvarts, says the university is lying.

“She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art,” Klasky (ed—the Yale spokesperson) said. “Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns.”

But Shvarts reiterated Thursday that she repeatedly use a needleless syringe to insert semen into herself. At the end of her menstrual cycle, she took abortifacient herbs to induce bleeding, she said. She said she does not know whether or not she was ever pregnant.

“No one can say with 100-percent certainty that anything in the piece did or did not happen,” Shvarts said, “because the nature of the piece is that it did not consist of certainties.”

Here’s the latest.

It’s not every day when the leaders of organizations on both sides of the abortion issue join forces to condemn something.

I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep up with this story. It’s more and more bewildering.

Unreal. Has this poor girl heard of watercolors? Chalk? Think she’s familiar with, oh, Van Gogh? Monet? Folks like that? I’m all for free expression, but uh…hmmm… ay yi yi…I can just see the unholy uproar if this had been at CU.

  • Reminds me of a GK Chesterton quote: “Men do not differ much about what things they will call evils; they differ enormously about what evils they will call excusable.”

Clearly this student finds her actions excusable as “art,” and while I am rarely surprised by evil anymore, this story definitely shocked me. Horrible.

  • When did art stop being about honesty?

ugh, I have been so disturbed by this since I read the first article last night. At least this was said in the new article: “This project is offensive and insensitive to the women who have suffered the heartbreak of miscarriage,” said Ted Miller. Offensive and insensitive times infinity, as my students would say.

  • Either Yale is trying to save face or this young woman is, I dunno, mentally unstable. Either way, the whole thing is beyond disturbing.

  • I was also horrified when I saw a blurb about this in our local paper. Wow. Disgusting and reprehensible.

Oh my word. I’m catching up on blogs today and saw this post and had to chase down your other 2 posts on it. First I’ve heard of it.
I’m stunned and disgusted, but not as surprised as I wish I was. If that makes sense.
