Top 10 ways to speed healing when you are bedridden with the flu

10. Watch episodes of Keeping up Appearances on YouTube. Laughing at Hyacinth is healing.

9. Drink Zhena’s Gypsy Egyptian Mint tea, whilst trying to keep the sachet from popping to the top. You can remove it, but it is like a helium balloon and balloons are healing.

8. Admire, spin, zoom in, zoom out on Earth and all the other planets with this cool free iPhone app: Planets. Seeing where the sun is rising at any given moment is healing.

7. Sleep.

6. Pop Tamiflu twice a day, but try not to dwell on the side effects. They include the desire to hurt oneself and hallucinations according to the handy guide provided by the pharmacist. Waiting for pink sunglasses with legs to show up and dance is not healing. The Tamiflu itself? I believe it helped me immensely, even though I was scared to take it.

5. Enjoy one of Jimmy Stuart’s funniest and most charming films, Harvey. I think I shaved 104 minutes off total flu time by watching.

4. Have your spouse or someone special fix a hearty bowl of meatball stroganoff for you, provided you aren’t too ill from the Tamiflu or experiencing gastric symptoms. The creamy tang of sour cream sauce over tender meatballs and al dente noodles is healing.

3. Sleep.

2. Do not watch Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. That added 120 minutes of suffering back into my life. I put up with it because I had hopes—the high kind.

1. Lie under your covers with a blanket pulled up over your exposed ear. Curl into a ball. Think about this time, next week. Pray.

  • Harvey is charming! I was lucky enough to co-direct a (collegiate) theatrical version when I was pregnant with Sydney. It was very healing, indeed.

    Healthy wishes for you!

  • I’m groaning that you had to endure Ghosts of Girlfriends past. I paid money (only $1 luckily) to see that movie and I felt like I would have paid more money had someone just prevented me from wasting my time on it.

Note to Matthew Mcconaughey – if you are not an attractive character in the movie, don’t do it. Your looks alone will not carry a movie.

  • I love Keeping Up Appearances! My mother turned me on to it a long time ago. Hyacinth is a riot; I adore her phone conversations with Sheridan, her son.

  • I’m so sorry the Lifenut family has the flu. I hope you’re back on your feet in no time Gretchen.

edj—I am feeling so much better. I wrote my list last night at the tail-end of being pathetic.

Heth—I am on my knees this morning. By tomorrow, I’ll be on my feet.

feefifoto—Sheridan is doing remarkable at University. His tutors predict great things for my Sheridan. I love how he calls because of their “psychic connection,” but funny, he always needs money.

Anonymouse—I agree. There wasn’t a redeeming quality about him, even after he repented. It was awful. Poor Jennifer.

Stephanie—How cool to be a part of something like that. Harvey never gets boring, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. It has to be the same when you are involved in the theatrical version. Non-stop laughs.

  • Praying for all of you Gretchen…

And wondering, if you had had the option to get the H1N1 shot, would you have done it (since you are living the ill effects of it?)???

We have to decide today for the kids to get a shot from our county health department… I am having a hard time.

  • “Harvey” is a great movie. But I sure hope I don’t have to use this list any time soon.

I discovered your blog last night while googling “how to color styrofoam.” Thank you for helping to make my (oops, my daughter’s) night-before ziggurat project a success. I’ve been enjoying reading some of your other posts as well; I’m definitely adding this one to my Google reader.

Hope you recover from the flu soon.
