Sensible shoes

Yesterday, at our very large church, I noticed an odd phenomenon.

Nearly all the teenage and young 20-something girls were wearing slide-on slippers (like these) with big fuzzy socks.

I couldn’t stop looking at feet.

On one hand, I was jealous at how comfortable they must have been. But my Motheriness always wins out and I found myself thinking things like, “What if an unexpected puddle appeared?”

Is this a trend where you live?

Wow. I’m jealous. I want to wear those. Although you couldn’t really WALK in them, could you?
And no, that’s not a trend here. Every woman from 2 to 60 is wearing BOOTS here in Morocco. Fashionable boots, let me stress. They are required. Every female, that is, except my daughter. Thanks for bringing up such a painful subject 😉 (We tried to get her some for Christmas but it hasn’t happened yet)

  • yes, big trend and I believe I took notice too yesterday at church. I think the big, comfy slippers are even more noticeable b/c they wear there skinny jeans as well.

  • I haven’t noticed the clogs. But I rarely look at teenagers’ feet. I think UGGs are still in around here. We in the midwest tend to be a bit behind the times.

Were the big fuzzy socks worn over tights or pants?

  • Well, you live in a place where there is more snow than there is here in VA, but I live in a place where I have been able to get by wearing birkenstock sandals in the summer and birki clogs in the winter (with socks). Except for about one day a year, I can even walk in the light snow in my clogs.

Currently I have a pair of fleecy crocs, which help a little more with the wet stuff.

    🙂

  • Wow, how strange. You seem to be the nucleus of random shoe trends. I remember a few years ago when you did a post about Crocs -and I’d never even heard of them out here on the East Coast. But within a few months I was seeing those ugly monsters everywhere.

Same goes with the slipper/sock as shoes phenom .., hasn’t hit here yet, but I’ll keep my eyes open, now that I know it’s coming.

  • I’ve seen those before, but I wouldn’t say that it’s a huge trend around here. I’m sure it will be soon, though. And the mother in me is thinking the same thing about puddles, also. Hehe!

  • I’ve not seen the fluffy version like that, but I have seen the slide-in shoes. These look like house slippers to me.

  • Too funny! I guess it is a natural follow-up to wearing PJ pants all over town!

  • Have you noticed how it makes them shuffle along like little old ladies?

Do we go to the same church? 64th and Ward area? Because I cannot get away from these slippers and it seems strange to see them in church.

Can’t say that I’ve seen those, but then again I had never seen or heard of Crocs before you posted about them either! I’ll be on the lookout for this trend to slowly make its way east.

  • Ha! I clicked on the link and laughed my little socks off (not quite literally) because I’m wearing my Dearfoam clogs right now. SO comfortable.

They aren’t too bad for wearing outside because they have a hard sole. I don’t wear mine outside because I wear them as indoor slippers, but plenty of people around here do. As for the puddles? Yep, we just get wet feet.

On the upside: It beats blisters from high heels 🙂

Not here, but I noticed a lot at DIA.

  • Do NOT mention this to my daughters….

They would love to go through life wearing pajama bottoms and fluffy slippers.

  • When I stood for hours in the magnet-school line in the cold, the mother next to me was wearing those.

  • I haven’t noticed those. I do see the sheepskin-lined Crocs (in the stores at least). I would wonder the same thing about a puddle. I think I might like this trend better than the big Ugg boots, though. My feet are claustrophobic and get too hot. I don’t know how people can stand to wear them when it isn’t really cold out.

  • Hmm I have a pair of similar slippers, with the hard rubber sole, so I can go out and get mail in them. I don’t wear them when it rains, though, and I never wear them anywhere farther than the end of the driveway. I also don’t wear them with fuzzy socks, just regular white socks LOL.

I can just picture all these young girls scuffing all over town LOL. The mother in me bemoans the further decline in posture, added onto the already horrible habit of slouching that all girls seem to have these days.

This inspired me to reply here for the first time ever! I too live in the Denver Suburbs, and today my 14 year old niece wore her slippers like these – TO THE ZOO. I begged her not to, because, ewww….but 14 year old girls don’t always listen to their uncool aunties.

  • Amy

i haven’t seen that trend here yet in alabama, but i’m sure it’s just a matter of time. i’m sure i’d think the same thing you did though. once you’re a mother that logical thinking mothering thing always seems to emerge. i love wearing my life is good fuzzy slippers around the house, but it seems like they would be difficult to deal with running around town. 🙂

  • Haven’t seen these. Evidently deck shoes are the “it” shoe ’round here, or so I’ve been told. I am tragically unhip, so what do I know?

Yes, these things are huge here. My son even wanted a pair. They are so comfortable and warm and really, what teenager would be caught walking anywhere near a puddle? Here, they get driven everywhere. No one walks except in the malls. Trust me, even I would love a pair.

  • I’m guilty. I have a pair, and I’ve been known to wear them around town. But never to church. For the record. 🙂
