  Well, I’ve definitely learned my something new for the day. You have to wonder what Mr. Noah Webster would be thinking about some of the words (and their ‘modern’ definitions) that can be found in a book, bearing his name. Really. wOOt?

  Also, I’m not sure if this is why ‘sputum’ has made it into the running, however, it may have to do with the big story this year about how that man with tuberculosis flew on different flights around the world. Also, I read in the news a few months ago, that while covering the story, Katie Couric mispronounced ‘sputum’ live on air. Then, she proceeded to slap and yell at the writer who put the word on her teleprompter, the next time she saw him.

  I’m not sure if that’s the reason, however it’s the only thing that I can think of that’s given ‘sputum’ any recognition lately.

  (I would have never guessed in a million years that I would ever write something in regards to the noteworthiness of sputum.)

  A-ha! The origin of “sputum”—I think you are right, Nicki. I hadn’t heard the Katie Couric story, but completely believe it.
