Sister sister

Aidan waited 9 years for a baby sister.

It doesn’t matter to me if I have a boy or a girl. I have 2 daughters and 5 sons.

We don’t need to even up the teams because we are on the same team.

If Beatrix is destined to have a baby sister, I simply hope she won’t have to wait for 9 years. Now would be fine. And that baby sister? She doesn’t really need a baby sister. Or brother. She can have a goldfish or miniature goat.

I am feeling my age. I am closer to menopause than menolettheordealbegin.

There are some advantages to being an old, pregnant mom. When I’m out with Beatrix and Archie, nobody wonders if I am their grandmother.

Magnet school

The Children’s Museum of Denver sports a long magnetic wall.

I parked Archie and Beatrix in front of some already-established phrases. I liked Archie’s noggin juxtaposed with the words happy with. It wasn’t until I got home and uploaded the photos when I noticed the magnet he was holding.

It’s a word to hold on to.

Mile High Mamas sent the three of us to The Children’s Museum of Denver to check out the theme of the month. I wrote about it. I fully understand it is of little interest to those of you who are fully oxygenated, i.e. not residents of Colorado, but if you live here you may want to go say hello and enter to win 4 tickets.

Then you’ll be happy, too.

Suddenly, he sees

Another child has triumphed over maternal cluelessness. The eyes don’t lie.

When the optometry tech slipped the glasses up Tommy’s nose, I saw, too.

He looked like he was seeing, um, everything for the first time. He got up and skipped around the store. He said whoa and awesome and I can read that sign! while pointing across the room.

The problem with catching vision problems is they happen gradually. Clues fall into place: The tendency to stand 2 feet away from a 42-inch flat screen TV. The teacher reporting the child likes to stand right in front of the smartboard, blocking everyone else’s view. Coming home from school with headaches. Often, there is a moment when the biggest piece of the puzzle is snapped into place. In Tommy’s case, it was his 8-year well child checkup. The hallway screening suggested his eyesight was a very iffy 20/70.

Tommy wasn’t thrilled with the idea of getting glasses, but now that he sees that he sees? He hasn’t taken them off, except to sleep and shower. He is very proud of them. He chose them on his own.

Today is his first day at school with glasses. I hope kids are being kind.
