Autumn

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it,
and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth
seeking the successive autumns.
– George Eliot

someday, this will be hanging over my piano

  • What a beautiful picture!

  • Mel

That picture sums up what I thought my children would look like and behave like. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

    I’m such a dreamer.

  • Hi Mopsy. My comment has absolutely nothing to do with your post but rather to do with your comment on Creature Bug’s blog. I too am an Amazing Race fan. (Although, I’m a little worried that this season will suck as it won’t be as cutthroat or competitive with kids on it.) Anyway, if you like the comments on theamazingracesucks (I’ll have to check that one out, I’ve never been there) you should also check out the comments at: http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/ QUITE enjoyable.

  • I think if I were a bird I’d do the same thing! I love autumn. I hope that it is joyous so far for you in your new home. Do you have lots of leafy trees in your new yard? I’m hoping that is where your stained glass window picture came from.

This is one of my all-time favorite paintings…I dream of having it hanging somewhere in my house, but it isn’t the kind of poster you can get from art.com…

Mel—you pictured beautiful, serene daughters doing yard work? Me too, and I was one of them. Now I’ve got lots of boys that would rather jump in leaves and are anything but serene.

CCAP—I’ve been to that site. I *could* read it all day. I am wary of the addition of kids to the race. I can’t see it being as exciting, but I will watch it anyway. I imagine it will be as exciting as watching the hostess seat our family at Chili’s on a Friday night. Minor thrills and chills.

Vashti—I love autumn too. It is my favorite season. We have 12 trees in our yard, nine are leafy. I am excited to see how they change as the days get darker and colder. The “stained glass” picture is of a leafy bush in our yard. It is right outside the window in my reading and writing room.

Mopsy, I don’t remember you being a serene daughter doing yardwork…. i remember you getting out of leaf racking because of allergies and imminent asthma attacks… or am I wrong? But you did have that look on your face a lot and I think mom even made us dresses that looked like that.

    Sister…

I meant I *dreamt* of having serene yard-work doing daughters, all of us outside in sun bonnets giggling about the lady bugs landing on our freckled faces.

I did get out of a lot of yardwork. Cough.

Adding: Ah, yes, faux Guinea Sax dresses. What *were* we thinking?

  • Julana

I would fly around alternating between springs and autumns.

  • The other Gretchen

I am one who never welcomed the end to always-too-short Summer (where I am from we are usually getting 50 degree nights by the end of August) but this year I am ready! I am wearing shorts and have bare feet again today (it was in the upper 80s) today, the day that Autumn officially begins. I’m ready to cool off!

  • Leaves really are the best part of autumn for me. I don’t care much for the cooler weather, but I can’t get enough of those gorgeous leaves. What a gloriously romantic picture.

  • sister-of-mopsy

I see… I showed Nichole a picture of me at 10 years old wearing my Guinea Sax dress, and she about peed her pants laughing so hard. Admittedly, the Richard Marcs mullet hair style I was sporting at the time and stockings up to my knees didn’t help matters.

A fashion “Don’t”. I can send it you to to post for a good laugh. But if you do put a black bar over my eyes some I’m not recognized by my public. 🙂

  • mopsy

Send it. I’ll post it here if there is enough popular demand…

  • Oh yes, Gunny Sax dresses and mullets, with “feathered” bangs that go all the way to the ears, and preferably, legwarmers down south.

One of my favorite memories of childhood is dragging together huge piles of leaves and jumping into them from our rope swing. I can now see the correlation between all my many childhood spider bites and my autumn activities, but at the time I didn’t care.

George Eliot is on my list of people to hobknob with in the afterlife.
