Another mother

My dear Grandma Mary died around midnight. It wasn’t sudden—she hasn’t been doing well, struggling with pulmonary fibrosis.

But it was sudden.

She was in a hospital on the other side of our state. Yesterday, as I was making lunch for my three little guys, I decided to call her. I caught her as she was waiting to be transfered to a nursing home. We talked about nothing in particular—how the kids were doing, Christmas, how she heard our turkey turned out brilliantly due to hubby’s brining. She told me she was feeling restless. Someone with a Santa hat poked his head in her room and made her laugh. Then she had to go to the powder room. The medications made it a regular thing.

She told me we would talk soon. I love you. I love you too.

Goodbye, Grandma Mary. Your tears have been wiped away.

    Mopsy,
    I’m so sorry for your loss. I loved my grandmother. She passed away in ’99. I still miss her. I’m so glad you had her, though.

    Gretchen, I can’t help but echo the words of everyone else here: I’m so sorry that she passed away, yet happy for you that you got to talk with her yesterday.

    Twenty years ago, my Grandpa passed away on a summer evening, and I was the last to be with him. I talk a little bit about it here in a blog. That will always be a special memory for me.

    Best Wishes and Prayers for you and your family right now; though Grandma Mary is free from pain and in a much better place, I imagine she is being sorely missed and fondly remembered.

    Gretchen, everyone else has said it all so eloquently. All I can add is a meek “ditto.” My prayers are with you and your family during what is surely a painful time. {hugs}

  • Gretchen, based on what I know about your family I’m sure she had a rich life. I hope that you all find peace and are able to have a wonderful celebration and reflection on her life. Peace be with all of you and especially with Grandma Mary as she journeys on.

  • Just imagine how much she must have been blessed to have a granddaughter who loved her so much. I’m so sorry for your loss.

  • That is wonderful that you were able to speak with her– I still remember vividly the last time I saw my Grandma before she passed away when I was fifteen. I am so glad that I kissed her and told her I loved her. So often we let those moments go by–I imagine your timing was not accidental. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • I’m so sorry. My thoughts are with you and your entire family

  • I’m so happy that you got to share one last “I love you” with your Grandma; you were both very blessed.
