A confession

I actually like the glucose drink and am looking forward to drinking it today. It will be my seventh time around, so I am familiar with the puckering orange hypersweet sensation in store for me and baby boy. It’s been chilling in our refrigerator since my last OB appointment. I’ve never had gestational diabetes and hope my streak continues.

Still, nothing beats my sister-in-law’s obstetrician, who has patients eat a certain number of Jelly Belly jellybeans or a Snicker’s bar for glucose tests. When I brought up the possibility with my OB, she looked a little horrified and laughed nervously. Really, I wouldn’t mind eating a candy bar in the name of pancreatic safety.

Side note: I was thinking of how many blood and swabby tests I’ve had in my eleven-pregnancies history. I’ve had ten (negative) HIV tests! TEN. I bet that is more than the average person in a high-risk population. And each time, my blood type remains and forever shall remain B+ (special Happy Blood! shoutout to 9% of the population—you know who you are). It’s not one of those things that changes with mood or whim. I wonder how much money is wasted in redundant blood testing?

  • Oh, all the blood tests! I always just went for them without even thinking about how much they actually cost. Then my sister got pregnant. Her husband is self-employed and they are self pay. Her very first round of blood work, the preliminary stuff they send you for on your first visit, was over $800! I am so very thankful for a good health plan!

Oh, and I too wish we could eat Snickers instead of that orange stuff. That would be a nice little bonus.

  • 11 HIV tests – I am laughing over here…

I think I declined my HIV test – is that possible?

  • Argh. GTT. Had mine last week. Came back borderline, which is good since I had GD with my first pregnancy. That is probably why I hate it, because the result is iffy for me.

Incidentally, your post a few days ago about your thoughts on the woman who wanted a c-section was great! Made me think. I am always so very quick to judge others.

  • Really, B+ is all that rare? I had no idea. I’m B+ too. Good luck on your glucose test.

  • I’m O+ and actually like that drink, too! Reminds me of Orangina!

  • I don’t mind the orange drink either. Just tastes like orange soda to me.

  • I’m B-. And my sister is B-. But my mom is B+ and we had different dads. I think that is so weird that my mom married two different men with RH negative factor and then her children both got that from them.

My daughter is AB+. I freaked out thinking her blood type was so rare that if anything happened to her, they wouldn’t be able to find blood for her. According to my doctor, though, she is the universal recipient and can take ANY blood. Woo Hoo!

(It isn’t safe to mention blood type around me. I have a think about it, as you can tell!)

Here’s to the non-gestational diabetes streak. Long may it last!

  • Wasn’t a big fan of the orange drink. But it wasn’t as bad as I imagined, either.

I’m O-, so I can help EVERYONE! But don’t come to drain my blood, even if it is Halloween…

  • I tried to convince my OB that I really could take a pass on the HIV tests, but he just frowned at me. Perhaps my husband looked particularily skanky on those days.

I’m RH Negative, so I get lots of needles during pregnancy. LOTS AND LOTS. Thanks, weird blood!

  • I hate that syrupy soda! I have had to go back with both of my kids and have the 3 hour test. The first drink is not so bad but after that it is pretty hard to get down. Enjoy, I guess!

  • Yeah, and if you get tired of wasting money on redundant testing and say no to the HIV test – just watch the nurses’ faces then.

  • Bleh. That drink made me nauseous. I’m glad it goes down easier for you. 🙂

And, incidentally, if hubs and I ever have another baby, I’m going to need the name of your SIL’s OB.

Hope the test goes well. I didn’t think the orange stuff was that bad either, though I can’t say I looked forward to it!

I have smart blood (A+), which I also passed on to Jacob. Peter got DH’s O+.
